Announcements:
  • Jokes of the day: A man visits his aunt in the nursing home.  It turns out that she is taking a nap, so he just sits down in a chair in her room.  He flips through a few magazines and munches on some peanuts sitting in a bowl on the table.  Eventually the aunt wakes up and her nephew realizes he absentmindedly finished the entire bowl.  "I'm sorry auntie, I've eaten all your peanuts" he says.  "That's ok dearie", the aunt replied, " After I've sucked off the chocolate I don't care for them anyway"

  • Foundation Month - November is Rotary Foundation Month.  We are very much behind in the number of our community who has given to the Foundation.  Scott and Brian will be giving a presentation next week on the Foundation and all the good works it does.  It is very important that we as a club give to the Foundation.  Grants that we apply for are scored on Foundation giving percentage - the number of our members that give - so $1 or 1,000  or whatever you can do will help us in our efforts
  • Chili cook off was a great success - Stan came away with the win with $750 in votes!

Speaker:

Ron Maxa introduced our speakers - Alejandro Pino, Executive Director and Tisha Ritter from YPN

YPN used to be known as Young Parent's Network, but they have expanded their scope and reach so the new name reflects new ideas and initiatives to help young parents in the community

YPN stated at Mercy Hospital in 1985 when a small group of teen moms met to try and help each other out in their new life journey..  Since that start they have grown to 40 wks a year meetings serving the Cedar Rapids community.  Meetings are helped at Polk Elementary School and usually include a meal and then workshops or Group.  Kids get cared for while parents are in Group.

The basics of the clients YPN serves is:
   Parents are 27 and below
   Kids are from age 0-5

Parents who are expecting are now included in the YPN clientele.  When the kids reach age 5 there is a graduation ceremony, and then the kids can transition into the Boys and Girls Clubs where YPN has a working relationship to keep their progress going.

YPN has a very successful program - the Diaper Bank.  Parents earn tickets from attending Group and also meting goals set in their group.  also through a partnership with Eastern Iowa Health Care parents can earn ticket by keeping their kids regularly receiving care there.  YPN is a prevention and incentive based program that liked to reward their clients for positive outcomes.

AS is our custom - we will be donating a book to Metro High School's library in honor of our speakers.

THE FOUR WAY TEST

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
