Steve Sovern was a Rotarian for 30 years! Was a Club greeter at the Montrose Hotel!

Connect CR has been raising money to revitalize Cedar Lake and build the Smokestack bridge with a pedestrian/trail connecting the two.
  • 5 year project
  • Recently hired WSP as the project Manager
  • Will start to see progress on the lake soon.
  • Have been able to continue with the project despite the pandemic
Plans for the lake include:
  • A boardwalk extending over the lake
  • Enhancing the wetlands on north side of the lake
  • Floating islands
  • New fishing jetties
The Smokestack Bridge
  • Site of the original bridge at the Sinclair/Wilson/Farmstead property which was destroyed in the 2008 flood
  • Connect CR developed a design team in 2015 who decided a tall bridge was essential to rebuilding the bridge
  • Decided on a 192 ft lighted smokestack
  • Replica of the historic Sinclair smokestack that was a landmark in Cedar Rapids for decades
  • Hoping to be able to use existing supports if possible.
Have already completed a Bike Trail that wraps through Mount Trashmore

Funding for Connect CR Project:
  • City Committed $5 Million
  • Hall Perrine Foundation committed to $5 Million
  • Private Capitol Campaign $7 Million
  • Working on grants for the remaining $3 Million
It is estimated that the Connect CR project will bring a $17 million boost to our economy

Once the project is complete, these areas will become part of the Parks & Recreation Department.

THE FOUR WAY TEST

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
