Speakers: Tonya Goodburn and Jason Blue from Avalon Hospice

Avalon Hospice focuses on quality of life to care for people who are in their last phases of life. Hospice care is provided by a team (including a physician, nurse, hospice aide, social worker, chaplain and volunteer) who focuses on palliative care, not curative measures to keep the patient as comfortable as possible. This care is meant to improve the quality of life for a terminally ill patient as well as for their family.

Hospice care is for all ages of people (not just elderly) with any terminal illness. Must be diagnosed with 6 months or less to live, although care can last beyond 6 months if needed.

Four Levels of Care
1. Routine Home Care
2. Continuous Home Care
  • Hospice aide in patient's home 8 - 24 hrs a day
  • Short term and reevaluated daily
3. General Inpatient Care
  • Severe short-term symptoms that cannot be treated at home
  • Nurses available around the clock
4. Respite Care
  • Relieves caregiver stress
  • Patient may be temporarily admitted to an inpatient facility
Hospice is paid for through Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or self pay.

Ways to get involved
  • Call office to make a referral (319-249-6360)
  • Request a Speaker
  • Volunteer or recruit volunteers
    • Must be at least 16 years old to volunteer
  • Share your knowledge of hospice

Next Week:

THE FOUR WAY TEST
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
