Speaker: Sarah Dawson, Scout Executive/CEO of Boys Scouts of America (BSA)
The Hawkeye Area Council, BSA serves Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties and is broken down into 3 councils: Red Cedar, Three Rivers, and Old Capitol Valley.
They serve 5,600 members annually with over 2,100 volunteers. Scouts and volunteers collected 77,640 pounds of food and contributed 21,874 hours of community service.
In February, BSA announced programming changes to provide opportunities for both boys and girls. Families have been asking for this change as they are busier and more diverse. It also allows BSA to reach underserved populations.
Programs:
Cub Scouting - Boy packs, girl packs, coed for K - 5th grades.
Scouts BSA - Used to be called "Boy Scouts". Boy and girl troops for 5th grade through high school.
Venturing - Coed for ages 14 and older. Focus on adventure, leadership, growth, and service.
Wakonda Kids Camp - Day camp that operates on 500 acres in Central City. Served 400 kids last summer with already 1,300 registered for this year.
