One Person Can Make a Difference
In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England.
In 1649, one vote caused Charles I of England to be executed.
In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
In 1868, one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment.
In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States.
In 1923, one vote gave Adolf Hitler the leadership of the Nazi Party.
And in 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
Each of us in our own way can make a difference.

Speaker: Julie Palmer of Olivet Neighborhood Mission
A native of Linn County, Julie fell in love with human services & nonprofit work when she was only a teenager. Inspired at a local summer day camp, Julie quickly developed a deep passion for charitable work. This passion grew into her decision to complete a BA in Recreation Therapy at Iowa State University. She spent the first eight years of her professional career at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids working with behavioral health patients. Her professional journey has included working as the Director of the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore; as an Associate Director for a research center at the University of Iowa; and as a local small business owner. In 2017, Julie completed a master’s degree in Public Administration, with the intent to return to nonprofit work again. In June 2018, she accepted the position as the new Director for Olivet Neighborhood Mission. She is excited to use her passion to help Linn County residents improve their daily lives by providing clothing and food!

Olivet Neighborhood Mission has been around since 1976. All donations stay local. They serve 3,500 non-repeat individuals at the food panty per month. They also have a clothing closet, holiday adoption program, community garden, a Head Start program, and partner with the Boys and Girls Club.

Olivet operates the largest food pantry in Linn County. About 75% of those served are in families, the other 25% are individuals. They are able to purchase food at HACAP (Hawkeye Area Community Action Program) at a significant discount to pass those savings along. The amount of food distributed last year would fill Kinnick Stadium 1 and 1/2 times.

THE FOUR WAY TEST
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
