New Member Reading: Ingrid Wensel with To The Rescue (sponsor Nancy Owen)
Speaker: Neil Fell - District Governor
Neil is from the Garner, Iowa Rotary club and spoke about the upcoming year in Rotary as well as the history of Rotary. The 2018 theme of Rotary is "Be The Inspiration". Neil discussed an issue close to his heart, child abuse and the statistics of occurrence in Iowa. He advised that Linn County has a rating of 59 out of 99 with 99 being no child abuse reported. This is a pretty good rating for Linn County as Neil's county has a rating of 24 (if I remember correctly).
Neil also discussed the history of the Rotary International and the dollars raised to eradicate polio. The total dollars raised are approximately $9B and not only has this nearly eradicated polio (only 13 reported cases YTD vs 10,000/day when the fight began) but it also provides channels to reduce other diseases such as the Ebola outbreak in 2013. If not for Rotary, where would the world be? Would polio still be rampant?
A final question to ponder ... "Where would you be without Rotary?"
Next week’s speaker: Balanced Fitness & Health - Melissa White
