Bio:
Melanie Wertzberger is the founder of Shaka, a business built based on her experiences as an employee that wanted more opportunities to connect and build a network and friendships at work but her employer didn't offer an employee-first culture. Melanie is a Cedar Rapids native who ventured off to Kansas State University to gain her degree in Finance and later the University of California, Irvine to earn her Master's in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. When she isn't working, Melanie enjoys playing sand volleyball, pickleball and is currently working towards the sommelier certification. What is Shaka:
For business leaders who are challenged with building a great culture for their distributed workforce, Shaka offers software and services that enable employees to connect for regular coffee chats with new colleagues, launch team-based challenges that foster camaraderie and well-being, and build communities within their workplace based on common interests.

2023-05-04 11:30:00Z | May 04, 2023 | Doug Elam | Cedar Rapids Community Orchestra | May 04, 2023 11:30 AM |
Doug moved from the Washington, DC area to Cedar Rapids with his family in 1999. He joined the Kirkwood Environmental Training Center where he managed the development of a series of online courses. (Who would have thought, online education 20 years ago?) While in that role he shared the stage with such heavy hitters as MIT, Cornell and DeVry Universities. He became the ‘poster child’ for distance learning while speaking at the League for Innovation in the Community College conferences.
After retiring from Kirkwood, Doug and long-time high school orchestra director Marty Clancey formed the CRCO. He also volunteers with the Salvation Army, HACAP, the Monarch Research Project, and as Reading Coach for kindergarteners and first graders, when he is not writing his book about Iowa’s Poor Farm Cemeteries. On top of all this, he is currently employed in the best job in the world: as ‘Papa’ to his six year old granddaughter, Clementine. |
